Some women practicing exclusive breastfeeding in Toro
By Akanji Alowolodu, Jos
The need for all hands to be on deck to ensure that exclusive breastfeeding becomes a practicable norm among women of child bearing ages and lactating mothers has been stressed considering the numerous benefits of the practice.
The assertion was made by the Chief Medical Director of Toro General Hospital, Dr Adamu Sambo while interacting with Media professionals who were in the facility on Wednesday on an assessment visit.
Dr Adamu Sambo lamented that many women who gave birth are not practicing exclusive breastfeeding due to numerous reasons principal of which he said is poverty which is making life difficult.
He observed that there is no way a woman who has not eaten well will be able to exclusively breastfeed her baby just as she will not be encouraged to engage in the practice.
The CMD further said that lack of adequate information on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding is another problem militating against the practice stressing the need for availability of the correct information.
He then urged media practitioners to embark on intensive sensitization campaigns on the need for concerned health authorities to stand in the gap in order to promote the practice.
Also speaking on the issue, the Chairman of Ward Development Committee (WDC) of Toro ward, Ibrahim Saleh stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding by mothers saying that it reduces risks of children killer diseases.
He however regretted that health authorities that are expected to promote the practice are not doing that a development he said must be mitigated against in order to save lives of the children.
Ibrahim Saleh assured that his committee members will continue to champion the cause of sensitizing women on the need to afford their new born babies the privilege of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
The facility visit was facilitated by the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) with funding from Bauchi Field Office of UNICEF during a 2 day media dialogue on Exclusive breastfeeding held at the Crest Hotel, Jos for Media from Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau and Taraba States.
