Tragedy in Jos as many miners lose lives as makeshift pit collapses

An undisclosed number of persons have reportedly lost thier lives while mining tin in a pit around Dura area of Jos South, Plateau State.
The deaths, mostly who are youths were said to be inside the pit when it collapsed on them killing some of them Thursday night, It was gathered.
Though there was no confirmation from the authorities over the incident, the area of Kwang village, one of the surrounding villages which had two of it’s own as victims, has been washed with sympathisers who throng the neibgohood ; wailing uncontrollably.
Sources in the area, who declined to be named, said the activities of these illegal miners has taken a turn for the worst as they engaged mostly in night mining to escape from the prying views of the security.
The area which is dotted with several unclaimed mining ponds was in the news in 2018, when a retired army general, Major General Mohammed Idris Alkali, who was reportedly missing was later found dead on 31 October 2018 in one of these ponds by the army who launched a manhunt for lhim based on security information in the area.
The capital metropolis have been engaged in mining activities with residents raising alarm of encroachment on thier properties by the illegal mining activities which is thrivibg without much caution by the state authorities.
As at present, such activities are still ongoing around settlements, even as concerns are being raised because of the nature of the soil which has become very wet and fragile.
