Professor Sanusi Mamman, a distinguished and accomplished academic, served as the fourth Vice Chancellor of the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina.
Equally important, he is a pioneer staff of the Faculty of Education. Therefrom, he rose through the ranks until he became the topmost head of that institution.
Historically, he is the first staff of that university to become its Vice-Chancellor, meaning, all his predecessors were from other universities.
When he taught me Special Education as an undergraduate student from 2007 to 2010. ICT in Education and Research Methodology as a postgraduate student from 2014-2018, I found him to be a thoroughbred scholar. Always exhibiting profound grasp of the subject-matter ,using a participatory methodology. Also,he is a great motivator and effective communicator.
He became the Vice-Chancellor when Covid-19 was ravaging the world,Nigeria inclusive. Yet he was able to achieve huge results.
For instance, the Faculty of Agriculture at Layin Minister, Malumfashi was constructed under his stewardship. He also completed the project for the Faculty of Medicine and saw its take-off.
Other impactful developments he brought to that University, include establishment of the school of Continuing Education (Part-Time Programmes), introduced amnesty scheme to reduce the rate of dropouts, promotion of welfare for the staff, renovation of faculties, construction of Special Education block, among others.
I hold this man in high esteem, because he is not just a mere academic or administrator, but a human development champion.
Although he has his own shortcomings like every human being, his usefulness to the humanity outweigh his minuses.
May he never give up in doing the great things he has been doing -Championing the human cause.
