Ummul Qurra school plants 1000 trees to promote healthy learning environment

In its commitment to ensure a healthy environment conducive for effective and efficient learning, Management of a private school in Azare, headquarters of Katagum LGA of Bauchi State, has procured and distributed for planting, 1000 seedlings of different trees. 

The disclosure was made by the Director and Proprietor of Ummul Qura Science Academy, Jibril Shirama while speaking to WASH Media members and WASH officials in his office on Thursday. 

He explained the Management decided to embark on massive tree planting in order to protect the environment and breed a conducive atmosphere that will enhance healthy living. 

On issue of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), he stressed that his school is taking it seriously by ensuring that the facilities are provided for the convenience of the pupils and students. 

According to him, “We have a total of 45 toilets in the school which are divided between the male and female students. We also ensure that water is always running in order to keep the toilets clean and habitable.”

Jibril Shirama added that, “We ensure that each class has a toilet which must always be kept clean. We ensure that the students were sensitize on how to keep a clean and healthy environment.”

While conducting the Journalists and WASH officials round the facilities, the Director /Proprietor emphasized that the school takes sanitation very serious and ensure that the students complied with every sanitary rules and regulations. 

He said that,”We employed people who are in charge of keeping the toilets clean always to prevent them from being dirty. We also ensure that other things needed to keep the toilets clean and habitable. Soap, Izal and other disinfectants are always available for use.”

Jibril Shirama however appealed to government agencies in charge of WASH to ensure that private schools were included in the various WASH intervention in order to ensure that they improve on hygiene issues. 

He specifically called on UNICEF to come to the intervention of the school to promote WASH activities saying that the WASH Club of the school is very active as the students received its introduction happily.
