New students hostels and blocks will soon be built in the University of Cross River State, aimed at addressing the persistent accommodation challenges faced by students and lecturers across its campuses.
The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has announced plans to build new student hostels and residential blocks,
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the national secretary of the Alumni Association of the school, Njang Ndoma, released at the end of an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC).
This followed the recent commitment of some investors who are backed by TETFUND.
The Association noted that this feat was made possible through the efforts of the acting Vice Chancellor of the school, Professor Francisca Bassey.
They noted that in the last five months, she has undertaken some critical reforms which have repositioned the school, which was enmeshed in leadership controversy for some years.
The Association disclosed that the VC has been able to secure government support for many school projects.
“The leadership of Prof. Bassey has proven she possesses unique ability to attract investments to the institution.”
They stated that for years, UNICROSS has sought a Vice Chancellor with the ability to engage effectively with the government until now.
“The ability of the acting VC to persuade the state government to implement the new National Minimum Wage within two months of her appointment, improving staff welfare as well as securing government’s approval for reconstructing access roads within the university, has been remarkable.
“The commitment to the institution’s graduates is worth mentioning as over 60% of her appointments are UNICROSS alumni.
“She is deliberately mentoring our graduates for higher responsibilities, demonstrating a deep commitment to our alma mater.
“Her leadership reflects the emotional attachment we share with UNICROSS.”
They therefore appealed to Governor Bassey Otu, the Visitor to the University, to back Prof. Bassey, urging the Governor to grant her the opportunity to continue her transformative leadership at UNICROSS.
