The Nasarawa Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), has assured victims of the recent windstorms in the state of the state government’s support.

The agency also said it had intensified efforts to complete assessments of the damages in the affected local government areas.

Barrister Benjamin Akwash, Director General NASEMA, said this in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Lafia.

The director general said he had gone for an on-the-spot assessment to various places in different local government areas that had been impacted by the windstorms.

According to him, the LGAs includes Karu, Akwanga, Wamba, Awe, Obi, and Lafia, adding that the purpose of the visit was to have comprehensive reports on the incident.

“In specific terms, upon assumption of duty, I can tell you I have personally gone for assessment at Gidan Zakara in Karu LGA, and I inspected the whole area where more than 30 houses were destroyed.

“In Gidan Zakara, together with Gora, the houses that were completely or partially destroyed were about 80 and even beyond, ” he said.

He added that his team visited Mahanga in Awe LGA, while other teams were sent to several places including Obi, where five children were found dead in an abandoned vehicle.

Akwash said his team also visited Olivet College of Health Technology, Lafia and Nassarawa Eggon LGA, where many houses were destroyed by the windstorms.
He said the state government was committed to providing support for the victims of all kinds of disasters in the state.

“Upon completion of the assessment, food and non-food items would be distributed immediately.

“There are places where worship centres like churches and mosques are affected, we will extend our support to them, ” he said.

He thanked Gov Abdullahi Sule for always prioritising the well-being and security of the people, particularly his prompt response to the issue of disasters in the State.

Akwash said that NASEMA would focus more on mitigation and prevention of disasters rather than waiting for the disasters to happen before bringing succour to the victims.

He said sensitisation and awareness creation was ongoing in the riverine communities on the need to vacate flood plain areas to avert colossal loss of lives and property.

He enjoined farmers and herders in parts of the state to live harmoniously and peacefully with one another.

Akwash advised people to avoid activities that are susceptible to disasters like building on waterways, flood plains, bush burning and indiscriminate cutting of trees.

According to him, both home and office appliances should be switched off when not in use.
