Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada (SDP, Nasarawa West) has been listed among senators in the Tenth Senate to have sponsored the highest number of bills, having so far sponsored 10 bills.
According to a release by the Order Paper, the official newsletter of the Senate, since the return of the Tenth Congress, there have been at least 14 senators who have introduced more bills from May 2023 to May 2024.
The top ten bills sponsored in the Red Chamber are as follows:
Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Borno North), 23, Senator Barau Jibrin (Kano North) 22, Michael Bamidele (Ekiti Central),17, Asuquo Ekpenyong (South Cross River),13, Daniel Oluwagbenga (Eastern Ogun),13, Orji Kalu (North Abia), 12, Mukhail Abiru (Eastern Lagos),12, Olamilekan Solomon (Western Ogun), 12, Banigo Harry (West Rivers),11 and Senator Aliyu Wadada (West Nasarawa), 10.
Senator Wadada, Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts, has within the spade of one year and some months, has sponsored 10 bills so far, a demonstration of his dynamism and exceptional leadership in his legislative duties.
Wadada has continuously maintained that the primary responsibility of a lawmaker is to make laws and not just make laws but laws that will turn around the fortunes of his constituency, Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large.
He emphasized that all the bills he sponsored are meant to make a positive impact on the livelihoods of the people of his constituency and the larger society.
The areas the lawmaker is focusing his strength are the areas of education, finance, and development.
Some of the bills sponsored by Senator Wadada include the Bill seeking for the establishment of the College of Agriculture and Fishery in Umaisha, Toto Local Government Area, which has been passed into law and awaiting the assent of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Another bill is seeking for the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to a Federal University of Mining Engineering and Technology. This is with a view to maximizing the potentials of Nasarawa State, known as the Home of Solid Minerals.
The FCT or Satellite Town Development Commission is another bill seeking to establish a common coffer that will be utilized to take care of the socio-economic challenges of the nearest communities or the nearest communities of these contiguous states to the FCT. States contiguous to the FCT are Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger and Kaduna. This fund will specifically seek to address development challenges around the Mararaba-Karu axis and to assist the Nasarawa State Government in meeting infrastructural needs and other socio-economic challenges.
Another important bill sponsored by Senator Wadada is the Audit Service Bill, which is seeking to outline in clear terms the roles of the Auditor-General of the Federation. According to the lawmaker, the Audit Service Bill will also introduce some aspects that will empower the Auditor-General of the Federation to be as powerful and assertive as possible so as to reduce visible challenges in the country’s auditing system.
Wadada explained that as part of his legislative achievements, he facilitated for the appointment of a substantive Auditor-General of the Federation in order to enable the Tenth Senate to consider and review the backlog of audit reports dating 1999-2022.
“Permit me to say that as soon as I assumed office as Chairman, Public Accounts of the Senate, I realized that Nigeria at that time had no substantive Auditor General of the Federation. Without the substantive Auditor General for the Federation, there is no way audit reports would be ready for discussion at the National Assembly, because the Constitution does not allow for an acting Auditor General to sign audited reports.
“I quickly wrote the President, and because he is a listening and responsive President, and beyond writing, I kept emphasizing it, and thereafter, the President appointed a substantive Auditor General for the Federation.
“The audit reports that have not yet been fully discussed for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 all now we are almost done, the Senate is almost done with the 2019; 2020 is ready awaiting our action on it. You see the speed that that has brought the appointment of the substantive Auditor General of the Federation.
“So kudos to the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, kudos to the 10th Senate, kudos to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for responding swiftly to the request or to our communication,” Senator Wadada stated.
