The President of an Igbo socio-cultural organization, the People’s Club of Nigeria, Chief Joe Ikonze, has said they would not tolerate dissidents who cause anarchy to tear the club.
Speaking against the backdrop of some members who broke ranks and wanted to hijack power from elected leadership, he said they have been expelled.
The President said those of them who were expelled and want to return should follow due process in accordance with their constitution, stressing ” we cannot allow anarchy to reign in the club. That is the bone of contention.”
He reiterated their commitment to the aims and objectives of the founding fathers of the body to cater for the welfare of their members and help less privileged people in the society.
The National President of the non-profit and non-political organization,, stated this during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the club held at its corporate office at Owerri Road, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Chief Ilonze said they reiterated their aims and objectives for their new and old members to take cognisance of them, saying that the aims/objectives were agreed upon during the inauguration of the club in 1971, immediately after the Civil war to help their kiths and kin who were emerging from the war and scattered all over the country and beyond.
Other objectives were to build guest houses, recreational facilities, hence the building of guest houses in Onitsha, Lagos, Aba, Abakiliki, Asaba, Abuja and other cities.
The president said against the backdrop of their aim/objectives, the club empowered the less privileged during the AGM with bags of rice and other items to allow them enjoy the yuletide like others.
Chief Ilonze enjoined the branches of the club all over the world to replicate the same gestures in their areas.
A patron of the club , Chief Wilson Azih, commended the leadership of the club for the transparency it displayed in the audited account of the club from2017-2022 by the firm of chartered accountant of Odocha and Co.
People’s Club was founded in 1971 by a group of like minded individuals who were moved by the desire to foster social interactions among members with Sir Prince Titus Ume-Ezeoke (JP) as the founding president.
The club however encountered legal difficulty with some of the expelled members following the appointment of one Chief Ekedozie by Lawrence Arinze as the President of the club when the tenure of Chief Ilonze has not expired.
But in a landmark judgment, an Anambra State High Court sitting at Ogidi, Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State on July this year nullified the appointment and declared Ilonze as the duly elected national president of People’s Club of Nigeria.
