Well to do individuals urged to identify, embrace people with disabilities around them

The District Head of Lame in Bauchi State, Yakubu Aliyu Lame has urged people to look around their environments and offer assistance to persons with disabilities with mobility and educational scholarships.

He was speaking during the presentation of mobility items to eight persons with disabilities by a faith-based NGO, Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre, Jos, Plateau State in collaboration with Bauchi State Television Authority (BATV) to commemorate the 2024 International Day for persons with Disabilities.

Lame said that, “We have many PWDs in our communities who need our help to take them off begging and it’s a challenge on us to learn a helping hand”.

The District Head also noted that PWDs need education to better their lives and commended Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre Jos for the partnership with BATV in putting smiles on the faces of the PWDs.

Representative of Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre, Jos, Sandra Nanbam said the organization has so far distributed free of charge, forty thousand mobility items that include tricycles, walking frames and Crutches both within and outside Nigeria.

She said the founder of the Centre, Ayuba Guwfan who is also a PWD had vowed to help persons like him have means of mobility.

According to her, “Today Ayuba is the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, so I urge you to go to school and improve yourselves”.

Nanbam reminded them on the importance of Routine immunization especially that of the wild polio virus which is the cause of most disabilities among today’s beneficiaries.

She said the Centre will continue to collaborate with organizations to assist PWDs and therefore commended BATV for reaching out to them.

Executive Secretary, Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Brisca Jerome said the Agency trains PWDs on various skills to make them self reliant.

She called on the beneficiaries to take the opportunity and enroll with the agency.

Managing Director of BATV, Muhammad Garba Ningi said the distribution is part of the organization’s corporate social responsibility

This year’s international day for persons with disabilities is celebrated under the theme Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.

The beneficiaries were selected from across the the State including men, women ,students among whom is a first class graduate of Mathematics, Muhammad Gadau.

They were full of gratitude for the gesture from BATV and Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre Jos.
