The Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi, has said they will henceforth focused more attention at encouraging distance learning.
She said that, with distance learning, overhead expenditures, are almost completely eliminated.
She disclosed this during a media parley to reel out programmes to climax their 50 years anniversary celebration holding from today till weekend.
The VC explained that the monthly subvention of N13 million the school receives from federal government was grossly inadequate, disclosing that they spend N16m on electricity bills alone.
“We are now focusing more on open and distance learning because students not need to be in the dormitory. attend lectures or have office staff to warrant payments of assorted overheads.
“Distance learning attracts greater number of online students who sits in comforts of their homes to study in all parts of the world. Distance learning takes in huge incomes compared with analogue teaching. We cant continue to run courses on analogue mode.
“National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, is now the richest tertiary institution. They’ve highest numbers of students because they run distance learning whose students are also eligible for NYSC programmes.”
She mentioned that her successor should be able to consolidate on efforts to expand the distance learning programme and other important projects hr administration has initiated to rake in revenues.
