As global environmental challenges intensify, the role of education in promoting sustainable development becomes increasingly critical. Nigerian tertiary institutions are uniquely positioned to lead this transformation by integrating green technology and climate change education into their curriculum. This approach will not only prepare students to tackle environmental issues but also equip them with the skills necessary for the green jobs of the future.

Understanding Green Technology and Climate Change
Green Technology refers to innovations designed to minimize environmental damage. These technologies aim to reduce carbon emissions, promote sustainability, and protect natural resources. From renewable energy sources like solar and wind to energy-efficient building materials, green technology encompasses a wide range of solutions applicable across various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and education.
Climate Change Education involves teaching the science behind climate change, its effects, and strategies for mitigation and adaptation. Integrating these subjects into tertiary education is crucial for several reasons:
To Raise Awareness: Research shows that educating students about environmental issues helps raise awareness and fosters a culture of sustainability.
To Drive Innovation: Knowledge of green technologies can inspire students to develop new, sustainable solutions tailored to local challenges.
To Prepare the Workforce: As the global economy shifts towards sustainability, there will be a growing demand for professionals skilled in green technologies.
To Address Local Challenges: Nigeria faces specific environmental challenges, such as deforestation, desertification, and pollution. Education can empower students to address these issues effectively.
The Nigerian Context
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is grappling with numerous environmental challenges. Deforestation, pollution, and waste management are growing concerns. The country is highly dependent on fossil fuels for both energy production and as a primary export. The rapid growth of the population, urbanization, and industrialization have contributed to environmental degradation, threatening public health, agricultural productivity, and overall sustainability. Climate change effects are particularly noticeable in Nigeria, with more frequent floods, droughts, and rising temperatures. As a result, the need for green technology has become more urgent than ever.

    Capstone Projects: Encourage final-year projects focused on solving local environmental problems using green technologies. These projects can foster innovation and provide practical solutions to community issues.

    Research Centres: Establish dedicated research Centres focused on green technology and climate change within universities. These Centres can collaborate with government agencies, private companies, and international organizations to drive research and innovation.

    Personal Experience
    Recently, I had the privilege to attend a Desk Study/Research on Green Technologies and Digital Innovation, facilitated by Dr. Anjorin, Folake B. Ph.D., and Agharese Lucia Onaghise (Sagay), M.Sc/DIC, on November 5-6, 2024, at Abuja Continental Hotel. As an educationist, this experience has widened my horizon on why the necessary authorities should take up the mandate of ensuring the younger generation is well-informed about green technology and climate change.
    Way Forward
    Sustainable development is crucial for Nigeria’s long-term prosperity. By integrating green technology and climate change education into their programs, tertiary institutions can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable practices across various sectors. This can help reduce the country’s carbon footprint and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.
    Conclusion
    Inculcating green technology and climate change education into Nigerian tertiary institutions is not just an academic exercise but a crucial step towards ensuring a sustainable future. By equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to address environmental challenges, universities can play a pivotal role in fostering a greener, more resilient Nigeria.
