By Akanji Alowolodu, Bauchi
Women have been described as effective veritable tools for peace building initiative who must be accorded the responsibility of mediating among warring parties in order to have a peaceful society.
The assertion was made by Programme Specialist with UN Women, Mr Peter Mancha during a one day sensitization training on HeforShe program as well as the need to include women in all peace building process across the country considering the peaceful nature of women.
Peter Mancha further stressed that study has shown that women possess the power to speak and convince the listeners no matter the situation coupled with their God given humane tendency which can draw people closer.
He explained that with the inclusion of women in the peace building process, areas where there were hostilities especially in Plateau State, peace has returned to the areas pointing out that most of the traditional institutions have expanded their councils with the inclusion of women.
The Programme Specialist particularly mentioned Mai Kaltungo in Gombe state who has included 40 women into his council with the responsibility of going round the Chiefdom with the aim of peace building.
He explained that the HeforShe program established by the UN through the UN Women is aimed at giving women support in their efforts to be able to stand up and contribute to peace building across the world.
Peter Mancha however explained that the program is not for women emancipation but promotion of gender equality particularly in the peace building process saying that the ability of the woman cannot be over emphasized.
He then charged traditional rulers who were at the meeting to go back and see the need to expand their councils to accommodate inclusion of women for the purpose of peace building within the communities.
Peter Mancha added that the UN Women is doing everything possible to make sure that the woman was effectively included in the decision making which will promote peace building.
The training held at the Chartwell Hotel, Bauchi, was attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, security personnel and media practitioners stressing the need to join the HeforShe program.
