World Bank, specialists engage riparian communities on community-driven development

Riparian communities of Ariya and Chibiyayi residing along the Hadejia-Jama’are and Yobe-Komadugu River Basins of Gamawa and Zaki local government areas of Bauchi State have been engaged on how to live and interact with the environment they find themselves.
The engagement was by the World Bank Team and Specialists from the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project in Bauchi State.
This was contained in a statement by the Communications Unit, Bauchi ACReSAL.
The engagement was targeted at enlightening the communities along the River corridors on the concept of Community Driven Development (CDD) to ensure buy-in of the Project and ownership for sustainability purposes.
The Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Bauchi State Dr Ibrahim Kabir while making an overview of the Project said that the project is a World Bank assisted Project in collaboration with the Federal Government and the 19 Northern states and the FCT.
He added that the Project is targetted to resolving all lingering issues around Agriculture, Environment and Water Resources particularly among riparian communities.
Kabir added that the visit by the World Bank and FPMU Team was to interact with the Community members about their experiences and challenges associated with the environment, Agriculture and Water that are directly affecting them and how possible the Project can intervene in solving the problems.

At both Ariya and Chibiyayi communities, the Team interacted with the community members who found out how heterogeneous their issues are and the communal efforts they have done in minimising their menace.
Livelihood activities of the two communities are rice, beans, Sorghum, Water melon and vegetable farming and requested for the support of farming inputs, wet and irrigation facilities in order to improve farming activities.
In their separate remarks,the community leaders expressed delight in selecting their domains for the important engagement and pledged to corporate with the project Team for smooth implementation of the project in the state.
The communities seek for more engagements from the Project Officials considering the fact that the environment has a unique feature that must be maintain through regular reminders as contained in a statement.
The slogan of the project is “ACReSAL, greening the environment, saving lives.”
