Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has stated that it is not unmindful of the challenges faced by journalism practitioners in their quest to adequately inform the public on issues of both state and National interest.
It however demand for upward review of remuneration from the proprietors of media organizations in the state to enable media practitioners cope with the challenges more importantly the hazards and risk associated therein.
The NUJ in a press release to mark the 2022 World Press Freedom Day stated that, “Similarly, as the 2023 General Elections are fast approaching, we appeal in strong terms to politicians, parties followers and the security agencies that any form of molestation, intimidations or harassment on our members in the line of duty will no longer be condone by the union”.
According to the release jointly signed by Saidu Bappah Malala, state Chairman and Danjuma Kala, Secretary the Union stated that, “We also wish to warn that political social media operators who poses a great threat to the mainstream journalism practice in an efforts to please or promote their political Godfathers by spreading fake news must henceforth desist from parading themselves as journalists or face the full wrath of the law.
“This will go a long way in sanitizing the profession from quacks and also pave way for free flow of objective, unbiased and professional news piece to the citizenry”, it added.
While wishing its Muslim brothers and sisters happy sallah, the NUJ prayed for Allah in his infinite mercies to reward all for their supplications during the month of Ramadan and give them good health in their daily endeavors.
“As we mark the world press freedom which was set aside by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) every year, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State council congratulated the entire working Journalists in the state for witnessing yet another day this year and urge them to work in conformity with the ethics of the profession”, it concluded.
