The traditional ruler of Lilu community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Barrister Godson Onyediri, broke down in tears on Friday as he reflected on the devastating impact of years of violence and insecurity on his people.

Visibly emotional, the monarch recounted how prolonged insurgency over the past five years led to the loss of lives, destruction of homes, and collapse of livelihoods in Lilu and neighbouring communities within the Anambra South Senatorial Zone, particularly those bordering the Orlu axis of Imo State.

Despite the scale of devastation, Igwe Onyediri praised the resilience and determination of the people of Lilu, especially the youths, whom he described as the backbone of the community’s gradual recovery.

The Monarch disclosed that his palace and personal residence were completely destroyed during the early stages of the unrest, noting that no part of the community was spared. However, he expressed deep pride in the unity and resolve shown by the youths in the face of adversity.

“Knowing that we have no other home but Lilu, our youths organized themselves, pooled resources, and charted a path forward. I commend every one of you for your courage and sacrifice,” he said.

Reassuring residents, Igwe Onyediri declared that peace and stability would soon be fully restored, setting a 90-day target for the return of normalcy.

“I want to assure all citizens of Lilu that all shall be well again. Within the next 90 days, Lilu ga-adikwa nma ozo,” he stated.

He explained that the Igbo expression means the community would regain peace and stability within the next three months.

While acknowledging the enormity of the destruction, the monarch expressed optimism that the painful chapter would soon become history. He also commended Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, for his efforts in restoring peace.

“Governor Soludo has not forgotten Lilu. In fact, he has done more for Lilu than over 90 percent of other communities in the state,” he noted.

Igwe Onyediri lamented the enormous financial and human toll the crisis had taken on the community, stressing that only those directly affected could truly grasp the magnitude of the losses.

He called on all sons and daughters of Lilu, regardless of political affiliation or social status, to set aside differences and actively participate in rebuilding the community, emphasizing that Lilu remains their only homeland.

The Monarch, however, warned individuals he accused of undermining peace efforts to reconsider their actions, stating that the ancestors and forebears of the land would not remain silent indefinitely.

“Posterity will remember those who worked for peace, just as it will remember those who stood against the collective good,” he cautioned.

Igwe Onyediri also applauded the youths for their initiative in organizing a recent national conference, describing it as a significant step toward unity, reconciliation, and sustainable development in Lilu.
