Reviewer: Munyal Markus Manunyi

she is Gombe,
a precious jewel
in all the northern Savannah hills,
a city worthy of her blissful name.

she is Adamawa,
brimmed with a collection of beautiful souls,
a home and place
are the clothes she wore.

she is Taraba,
nature’s gift is her sweet name,
beautiful flowers, green trees
& different cultures
she harboured
in her deep stomach.

she is Bauchi,
tourism and culture are the stars
that light her darkest nights,
Yankari spring flows
with a cool breeze of happiness
& pleasure within its chest.

she is Borno,
ocean of light,
beautiful lakes of Kanuri

              & Shuwa Arab

  a mother

whose children see in the dark
foretelling the stories of morrow,
writing poems on their brown shirts.

she is Yobe,
a glowing star
that sparkles her glittering rays of pride in the Sahel,
through her glorious borders
in Tulo-Tulo
the wind collect the
sand dunes
to paint the sky.

Yahuza’s ability to weave words and creativity is something that cease not to amaze me. However, not only that, his ability to see beyond the usual also attributes him to being an exceptional poet thereby making his poems outstanding. Particularly, I love the manner in which he took time to describe the different slogans, tribes, and other hidden beauties embedded in each state mentioned in the poem he wrote above. This of course shows he is either Knowledgeable in history, or has done his research very well. Bauchi for instance is known for its tourism and culture. Its major landmark can be traced to the Yankari Games Reserve, but most times people usually fail to mention the fresh cool breeze that accompanies this beautiful scenery. Well, such details never bypass a good poet like Yahuza. He took all the details into cognisance when he wrote:

she is Bauchi,
tourism and culture are the stars
that light her darkest nights,
Yankari spring flows
with a cool breeze of happiness
& pleasure within its chest.

As a matter of fact, I’m the kind of person who easily gets fascinated by natural features that make up my environment. When I sit down, I see beauty in everything around me: the people, the trees, mountains and all. This exactly is what makes me love this poem.
In his own world, Yahuza has created a beautiful picture of every state mentioned in his poem using imagery, personification, metaphor and so many other literary devices that costumes the poem.
