Following the heavy rainfall that resulted in flooding across parts of Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, scores of youths have mobilised themselves to clear and unblock drainages in affected communities.

The flood submerged more than 20 houses in Raka, Mahuta and Manchok communities after drainages were blocked by debris.

The youths left their farms and homes to engage in community service, manually digging and clearing the blocked culverts.

Speaking during the exercise, the Manchok branch Youth Leader of the Moro’a Development Association, Moses Mathew, said the decision was borne out of the need to take responsibility rather than wait endlessly for government intervention.

“Yes, we are doing what we can manually. But the work is beyond our control, so we are still calling on the government to come to our aid in different ways and capacity,” he said.

He explained that about six culverts were discovered to be blocked, adding that the volunteers have begun opening them one after the other while waiting for authorities to step in.

Residents commended the youths for the healing effort but called on the government to urgently deploy equipment and technical support to avert future disasters.
