‘Zaranda hotel requires N100m to compete favourably’

Zaranda hotel, Bauchi used to be pride of north-eastern Nigeria, is now in dire need


As part of efforts to encourage tourism activities in the state, Bauchi State Government has bankrolled seven months unpaid salaries of over 100 Zaranda hotel  workers in order to revive the effective and efficient services of the hotel to regain its lost glory and to restore the confidence of the Workers on their Job.

This was disclosed by the recently appointed General Manager of the Hotel Hajiya Asabe Ibrahim Musa, during an interaction with journalists in her office recently.

She said “It will also be recalled that we inherited substantialliabilities in the form of unpaid workers’ remuneration from previous administrations, decayed   hotel infrastructures and services however, since government is a continuity, we have continued to treat those liabilities as ours and to tackle them as much as we can from our own meager income.”

According to her, “when I was appointed as the General Manager payment of salaries owed to workers is the most pressing issue before me, even though there were issues inherited by the present administration of Senator Bala Mohammad from the previous administrations in this hotel but the major problem is the issue of the welfare of workers that are unsolved, but today we thank almighty Allah, the state government has helped us  the issue of salaries of Zaranda Hotel today is regular and prompt. She commended the administration of Governor Bala Mohammad and the efforts of the commissioner of commerce and industry Mohammad Sadiq for coming to her aid as new officer incharge of the hotel. Adding that, “I have nothing to do but to thank  almighty Allah who answered my prayers for starting on a good note to improve on the welfare of the workers”. According Asabe, “Other challenges we have found in the hotel was problems of rats, insects and other dangerous rabtiles . Therefore i  took upon me as a challenge, Invited fumigators, we have carried out strong cleanliness of the hotel after we fumigated the hotel we killed over 20 snakes we killed the insects, lizards and rats to day we are up to standard, we have improved our dilapidated kitchen and conference halls, we repaired our lifters the engine that carry guest to up stairs from the ground floor and  we repair our laundry machines and we are working hard to repair all the dilapidated areas in the Hotel.”

Asabe said “we have improve our services but because the Hotel is one of the oldest in the state , we need over N100million  to purchase new facilities and equipment to renovate the hotel  through direct labour in order to restore the lost glory of the Hotel and expressed confidence that the state governor will come to their aid in this respect to maintain it seperiority in the North East sub-region.”

The GM said the hotel now accept guest on pay before service as the state Governor said even himself or his wife if they come to the hotel they must pay, he took this measure to reduce incurring more debts from the coffers of the state government. She  thank the state government for settling the Inland Revenue debt that saved the hotel from being sealed by the revenue agencies.
