Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Branch have resolved to
remain undeterred by the ploy of the University Management and shall steadfastly pursue the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to a logical conclusion.
ASUU also berated the University Administration for engaging in shifting goal posts and denying the Union vital information regarding its computed arrears for verification, deliberately attempting to prolong the achievement of the MoU beyond the stipulated time frame.
The assertion was contained in a communique of the Congress meeting held on the 19th of June 2025 at the Management Sciences Conference Room, Yuli Campus signed by Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, Chairperson and Comrade Yahaya Yakubu, Assistant Secretary.
It added that, “Another recent ploy by the University Administration, as noted by the Congress, is the deliberate denial of its members’ salaries. The Congress resolved to remain undeterred by the ploy and shall steadfastly pursue the implementation of the MoU to a logical conclusion.”
The ASUU branch stated that, “It could be recalled that the Union at its congress held on the 29th November 2024 declared an indefinite, total and comprehensive strike action to press home its numerous demands after several attempts to resolve them amicably with the University administration failed.”
It added that,”The strike was suspended on the 10th of December due to the swift, prompt and fatherly intervention by the Visitor. His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.”
As contained in the communique, “The Congress deeply appreciated the Visitor for the fatherly intervention that resolved all the issues contained in the Union’s demands at a single sitting.”
ASUU appreciated further that, “The Visitor did not stop at that, he further established a framework, by signing an MoU with the Union, to achieve the demands of the Union in respect of its accumulated claims within a period of not more than 12 months.
“To this effect, the Visitor has graciously and greatly increased the monthly subvention of the University since the MoU was signed. Another prompt and
fundamental action taken by the Visitor, noted by the Congress, was the constitution of the High-Powered Visitation Panel to the University. This, Congress believes, will resolve many issues of present and future concern affecting the University,” It stated.
The Union stressed that,”However, this great effort of the Visitor may hit a brick wall. The Congress has noted with dismay the strategic and deliberate attempts by the University Administration to
sabotage the achievements of the MoU within the stipulated time.”
According to ASUU,”The time frame
stipulated by the MoU is now halfway, yet a huge part of the accumulated claims remain unsettled despite the substantial improvement in funds to the University over the months.”
The Congress, therefore, condemned any act of preventing the implementation of the Mou, and called for the intervention of the Governor, the Visitor, to monitor the
implementation of the MoU and compel the University Administration to work towards achieving the MoU within the time frame.
“This communique becomes necessary to abreast the public and relevant stakeholders of the current happenings at the University,” It concluded.
