A wave of outrage has swept through Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State following the alleged killing of a young man during the 2026 Nwafor Ogidi Festival.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was allegedly stabbed by a masquerade after reportedly refusing or failing to hand over money demanded from him during the annual cultural celebration. The victim was said to have sustained severe injuries from the attack and later died.
The incident, which has generated widespread reactions both within and outside the community, has raised fresh concerns about safety and the conduct of some masquerade groups during traditional festivals. Residents have expressed worries over recurring allegations of harassment, intimidation and extortion associated with masquerade outings.
Concerned members of the community have called on Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, to order a full investigation into the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
One resident, while reacting to the development, said cultural festivals should not become occasions for violence, stressing that traditions must be observed within the boundaries of the law and with respect for human life.
The incident has also renewed calls for stricter regulation of masquerade activities during public celebrations. Legal observers note that although cultural festivals are an important part of Nigeria’s heritage, they remain subject to the country’s laws, and state authorities have the power to regulate such events in the interest of public safety and order.
They further emphasised that anyone involved in assault, intimidation, extortion or any other criminal act during cultural activities can be held accountable under the law, regardless of traditional practices.
Residents have urged the Anambra State Government, security agencies and traditional rulers to review existing guidelines governing masquerade activities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not released an official statement on the incident, while the identity of the deceased had yet to be officially confirmed.
The tragic development has left the community in mourning, with growing calls for justice, accountability and stronger measures to ensure that cultural festivals remain peaceful celebrations rather than scenes of violence.
