The Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Ecological Funds, Shina Oyedeji, says the National Assembly would do everything humanly possible to support Kebbi state in the fight against the negative impacts of climate change.
Hon. Oyedeji spoke in Birnin Kebbi when he led other members of the commitee on a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, on behalf of the Chairman.
While explaining that climate change was more evident in global warming, drop in food production and animal husbandry, desertification and other natural disasters, Oyedeji said that Nigerian Government would do a lot to stem the tide of ecological scourge resulting from both human and natural activities.
He added that the essence of the nationwide tour by the committee was to assess the deployment, management and impact of the ecological funds in order to come up with a workable database in that direction and do the needful to improve the functions of the funds.
The lawmaker said that the commitee attached importance to Kebbi State because it was the first it visited because of its geographical location, and therefore called on the state government to share with the members its ecological challenges as well as the information on the utilisation of the ecological funds.
Responding, the SSG, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida who represented the governor said Kebbi State Government had been up and doing in the implementation of projects under the mandate of the fund, but would require additional intervention to expand the horizon of the programme.
He said, “In Kebbi State we have serious negative impact of this ecological problem, by the time we go round you will see some of the areas negatively impacted by the problem and what the government had done to a significant extent.
“We will certainly require more funding to deal with the problem, we have a lot of problems particularly in Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Argungu and even Birnin Kebbi,” he lamented.
