NIMET flood predictions: Kebbi sets up 16-man safety measure committee

Following the predictions of NIMET mentioning Kebbi State as the possible geographical location to be hard hit by the massive flood waters that would surge into the country through River Niger, the State Government has set up a 16 man committee to fashion out modalities of mitigating against the impacts of th6 floods.

While briefing journalists in Birnin Kebbi, the Commissioner for information, Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi said the State Government at it’s executive council’s meeting had constituted a 16 man committee to curtail the danger the impending flooding may cause the communities around the River Niger areas in the state.

The commissioner stated that NIMET had predicted that some communities around River Niger in the state might be worst hit by flood because of the convergence of waters in River Guinea from River Jallon, River Gambia which flows into Kebbi State through River Niger.

He said some of the communities that NIMET said might be worst hit included Bunza, Suru, Argungu, Augie, Birnin Kebbi, Bagudo,Kalgo, Dandi, Arewa, Yauri, Ngaski and other riverine communities in the state.

He said the state government may decide to relocate some of the communities around River Niger to the highland areas and had directed chairmen of the affected Local Government Areas to begin enlightenment and sensitization of the locals while government was looking at the possibility of creating IDPs camps for those that may be affected by the flood.

He added that the 16 man committee under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida have been mandated to find out the likely impact and damage the flood may cause and measures to be taken to address and curtail it.
