‘The Circle’ earns AFRIFF nomination, spotlights girls’ education
A girl walks along a road, carrying goods to the marketplace, while other children in school uniforms pass her with books and schoolbags. They share the same road, but their destinations tell different stories: one leads to the classroom, the other to a future shaped by denied opportunities.
This poignant image captures the central message of The Circle, a Nigerian short film exploring early pregnancy, the denial of education to girls, and the troubling patterns of disadvantage passed down through families.
Written and produced by Adeola Adeniyi and directed by Lagos-based filmmaker, Godsent Abode, the film has earned a nomination for participation in this year’s Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), marking a significant milestone for a project built around a compelling social question: Is there room for every girl in school?
Featuring Olamide Oladapo and Seun Osigbesan, The Circle examines how early pregnancy and societal attitudes can derail a girl’s education, limiting her opportunities and perpetuating cycles of disadvantage across generations.
Through its storytelling, the film draws attention to the experiences of girls whose dreams are interrupted by circumstances beyond their control. It also challenges communities to reconsider the barriers that prevent girls from accessing education and building independent futures.
The AFRIFF nomination offers the film an opportunity to bring its message to a wider audience, using cinema as a platform to spark conversations about girls’ rights, educational inclusion and the social consequences of denying young people opportunities to thrive.
For The Circle, the journey to AFRIFF represents more than recognition for a creative project. It is an opportunity to amplify the voices of girls whose stories often go unheard and to confront a question that remains relevant across many communities: should a girl’s future be determined by her circumstances, or should she have the opportunity to rewrite her story?
