A visit to Argungu and detour to pay homage to the revered Emir
By Yakubu Ahmed BK
A visit to Argungu is always incomplete for me without paying homage to the likeable, eloquent and a journalist’s delight Emir of Argungu Alhaji Samaila Muhammed Mera.
When you stay a few minutes with him, you come out the better for it because every minute is a period to get to learn something new.
A tour of duty took me to Argungu today and when I broach the idea of driving into the Palace, members of my team were elated at the opportunity. There he was in his regalia, simple, unassuming, authoritative as he detailed some aspect of the history of Kabi as a Kingdom as far back as some 500 years ago and Kebbi state as a whole.
The team I led to the Palace included journalists from Lagos who have never been to Kebbi. They came out full of encomiums and fully impressed by the simplicity, knowledge, elequence and charm of one of Kebbi’s 4 first generation, first class and highly educated Emirs. Two of them promised to come back.
One positive thing about this amiable Emir is his belief in the leadership of Governor Nasir Idris. Every opportunity he gets, he takes one into how Dr Nasir Idris had warmed himself into the hearts of the ordinary people of Kebbi state, how he earned their trust through compassion and generosity long before becoming a Governor and how he has fulfilled his campaign promises through infrastructure upgrade and care for the people of Kebbi state.
