The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has called for attitudinal change over the maintenance of government infrastructures, sanitation and approach to work in the State.
Commissioner Chuma-Udeh made this call during an unscheduled visit to Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, (ASUBEB) in Awka.
The Commissioner decried the State of infrastructure and general outlook of the complex, saying that it was a shadow of its former self.
She called on workers to desist from the habit of treating government property with neglect, which may result in their wearing away or getting damaged.
“The responsibility of maintaining infrastructures provided by the government is the collective responsibility of workers and the State.
“The idea of seeing government as being solely responsible of these items provided to make work easy and accessible is what has brought about the deplorable State of most infrastructures in the State.”
Prof. Chuma-Udeh, therefore, enjoined the management of the board to cultivate good sanitation habits and periodic repairs so as to keep the property in their care in good condition at all times.
Commissioner Chuma-Udeh, who also expressed displeasure at the absence of most of the workers from their duty posts, said that it was against the civil service rule to be away from duty without permission.
The Commissioner called on all the staff to live up to the demand of their jobs, adding that there was a need for reorientation of the workers on acceptable behaviours that were expected of them during official hours.
“A situation where officers turn offices to loud discussion platforms goes against the ethics of the profession and leaves a sour taste in the mouth.”
She told the heads of the board to prepare a detailed report on the cost implication of renovating the complex.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh was conducted round the board by the Director of Administration, Mrs. Nnebechukwu Okoli and the Director of Accounts, Mrs. Nrabalu Oyibo.
