Six individuals were arrested in Oba, Anambra State, on April 16, 2025, for allegedly exploiting four ill people to solicit alms.
A joint operation by the Oba Divisional Police Headquarters and Anambra Vigilante operatives uncovered the scheme at an uncompleted building in Isu Village.
The suspects, Doris Basil (28), Peter Ezedike (38), Susan Monday (27), Ogechi Okoro (27), Solomon Sunday (29), and Kenneth Achi (29) were apprehended with ₦82,400 in cash and six mobile phones.
The four victims, suffering from illnesses including brain tumors and breast cancer, received first aid and are being prepared for medical treatment and reunification with their families.
Police Commissioner CP Ikioye Orutugu condemned the exploitation, citing potential charges under Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code (up to three years imprisonment).
An investigation into the involvement of the victims’ relatives is underway, and the six suspects will face prosecution following the completion of investigations.
