Bauchi Governor Mohammed receives women council officials, seeks amendment on female participation in governance
Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi State has seek for some amendments in the participation of women in governance to ensure active participation.
Governor Mohammed was speaking when he received in audience, officials of the state branch, National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) who paid him an advocacy visit at Government House Bauchi.
In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Muktar Gidado, the Governor who expressed concern over the challenges faced by women folks and girls child in the society, criminalized any act of rape and other violence against women in Bauchi.
He directed the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General to come up with new measures against perpetrators of gender based violence against women so as to serve as deterrent to others.
While applauding the state House of Assembly for the passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition bill, pledged speedy assent when presented before him.
“I welcome you to Government House Bauchi, I , my deputy and my wife knows the respect and care we have for women folks and we always know that, we have a burden on ensuring the welfare of our women and children.
“I want to apologise on non-participation of women in governance, but stakeholders must work together to ensure some amendments on the participation of women in governance. We have taken measures as government to bring women to participate in governance.
Governor Mohammed who described education as one of the tool for societal development, said the state government is reducing the prevalence of out of school children through massive renovations and rehabilitations of classrooms.
The Governor assured that his administration will consider the domestication of Child Right Act based on the peculiarity of the state after consultation with critical stakeholders.
“Any form of sex and gender based violence is a crime against humanity and we must work as a team to protect our women.”
On her part, the State First Lady, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed assured to work with the forum for the wellbeing of both women and children in the state.
The State President, National Council of Women’s Societies NCWS, Mrs Shafau Ladan Yusuf intimated Governor Mohammed that the societies was introduced to among others, improve the welfare, progress and standards of living of women in the country.
She said the council is working in active synergy with the office of the State First Lady and the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development to ensure the welfare of women and children.
“Your Excellency, our NCWS is working on increasing the role of women in governance and we request for your support to help us to live up to expectations.”
