The leaders of Ebonyi State in Anambra State have frowned at the continuous stereotyping of their indigenes resident in the state as the major perpetrators of criminal activities.

They spoke recently during the Pastoral visit of the Catholic Bishop of Abakiliki Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, to Ebonyi people residents in Onitsha at SS and Paul, Iba Pope Church , Awada.

Those who spoke to deplore the profiling of the Ebonyi citizens include: Evangelist Elijah Chukwuka Nwodo, the President -General, Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Chief Moses Ogbonna, Coordinator of Ebonyi Communities in Anàmbra State and Ambassador Prince Goodluck Igwe, the General Chairman, Ebonyi State Catholic Community in Onitsha.

Chief Ogbonna who was the chairman of the reception during the Bishop’s pastoral visit and Chief executive of Most Frank International Ltd, Onitsha , said they were not happy the way their citizens were being tagged as criminals in Anàmbra State at the slightest opportunity.

He said there some Ebonyi people who got involved in crime just like the citizens of other States but that was not enough to sterotype the entire state as criminals, saying that crime has no tribe.

Chief said it is unfortunate that people forgot that the people of Ebonyi State do the most hard and menial jobs in the State to sustain its economic activities, describing them as “the most hardworking people in the State”.

He said that the greatest problem of their people is poverty but commended the Governor, Francis Nwifuru for being committed in eradicating or reducing poverty among the people of the State.

Chief Ogbonna said that about 100 Ebonyi people resident in Anambra State were among the beneficiaries of the Governor’s N200, 000 each programme to indigent Ebonyi persons, which gulped about N200m from the State Government.

He expressed thanks to the Governor for that gesture, stating that he was optimistic that Governor Nwifuru would do more to elevate the economic standard of his people.

Evangelist Nwodo said that Ebonyi people were not known for crime, arguing that those criminals they tag as Ebonyi citizens were not actually from Ebonyi State.

He said: “They are people from other States. Ebonyi people are respectful and hardworking. Those people who claim that they are from Ebonyi State are not real Ebonyi people”.

In his contribution Ambassador Igwe said that many people misunderstood Ebonyi people, describing them as ” wonderful and hardworking group of people”.

He said it is only Ebonyi people who struggle to triumph over their challenges or situations with prayer and hardwork, lamenting however that this generation of Ebony people are going back to idol worship and cultism, which was part of what they were fighting to overcome.

He stressed the need for the Government to continue to partner with the people to pull them out of poverty through skill acquisition and other empowerment programmes.
