The historic city of Onitsha in Anambra State is vibrant once again as preparations intensify for the 2025 Ofala Festival the annual royal celebration honouring the revered Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.
This year’s festival, themed “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance), promises a rich showcase of cultural heritage, spiritual observances, and communal festivities that underscore the essence of the Onitsha kingdom.
As tradition dictates, a series of pre-Ofala rituals have already commenced. These include: Owuwaji (Yam Festival): Marking the start of a season of thanksgiving and celebration; Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha: The Obi’s period of spiritual retreat and intercession for the wellbeing of the kingdom; Ogbalido (Feast of Atonement): A solemn rite that precedes the monarch’s formal reappearance.
The main events begin with the Iru Ofala on October 17, when the Obi will make a ceremonial appearance in full regalia, greeted by his chiefs and subjects in a grand royal display. This will be followed by the Azu Ofala on October 18, a community-focused celebration featuring colourful parades by age grades, cultural troupes, and local groups paying homage to the monarch.
Speaking on preparations, Mr. Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of the Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, described the festival as a unifying force for the Onitsha people.
“This year’s theme, ‘Njiko na Ntachi’, highlights the enduring spirit and unity of our community,” he said. “The Ofala Festival continues to be a vital platform to celebrate our traditions, reconnect with our roots, and welcome visitors from far and wide.”
Maduegbuna added that the event draws attendees from across Nigeria and beyond, offering a unique opportunity to experience the rich cultural legacy of Onitsha.
