How Bauchi orphanage was swindled by fake Amnesty International director

The Chairman, Mallam Kawu Youth Rehabilitation and Orphanage Centre, (MKYROC), Alhaji Abdullahi Mohammed Tahir has narrated how he was cheated by one Dr. Sulaiman Shuaibu (Sarkin Shanun Shinkafi).

Dr. Shuaibu had claimed to be a director with Amnesty International and promised to connect his centre with international donors for assistance.
Dr. Suleiman’s shady deals with the centre were initially exposed by an online news medium based in Bauchi. He swindled Alhaji Tahir of N2million about two years ago and had offered N100, 000 which was rejected.
Dr. Suleiman had approached the NGO under the guise he was opening a website and linking it with International donor agencies for funds.
But, after confessing to the shady deal, Dr. Suleiman pledged to refund the money in installments and sent a paltry N100, 000 through a mediator ‎who is a staff of Bauchi State judiciary.
Narrating his ordeal, Alhaji Tahir said Dr. Suleiman pretended he was a top official of the Amnesty International and was willing to assist the centre grow.
On why he rejected the part-payment, Alhaji Tahir said: “The reason why I will not collect the money is that the man is capable of paying more than this amount considering his status, a man who can travel to America, England and any other part of this world, a man who told me that he owns a hospital and other investments. This amount is too small.
He said the N2million he gave out was borrowed from different people thinking Dr. Suleiman will actually assist the centre.
Tahir who was visibly angry threatened to forfeit the entire amount and sell off the centre to pay the debt since the man has shown that he was not willing to refund the money.
He said the center is the only asset he has in his entire life but will be forced to sale it so that he can settle the debt and let the orphans and others undergoing rehabilitation to go to other places because he could not continue to live under such huge debt.
He rehabilitation centre accommodates about 350 people across 18 northern states in the country.
According to Tahir, initially Dr. Suleiman boasted that even the EFCC will not do him anything.
The Publisher of WikkiTimes, Haruna Mohammed Salisu, which carried out the investigation, said he was grateful to God for the work they did.
“When I was tipped off about the incident, I invited my colleague, to join in the investigation and I’m glad the culprit had conceded dubbing the centre and offered to refund the money in installments,” the publisher added.
