Insecurity: IGP harps on need to secure environment

Worried by the insurgence by various terrorist groups in Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, took it upon himself to enlighten the public on the need for a secured environment that would engender growth and stability in the country by embarking on sensitization visit to parts of the country.
His sensitization visit to South East Zone took place in Owerri Imo State.
The sensitization campaign tagged security summit which started in Abuja in May 2017 with the theme, “Forging partnerships for effective strategies to curb the menace of kidnapping, recurring farmers-herders clashes and criminality in Nigeria” also featured in Lagos on 4th August, 2017 and has been held in three regions of the country, each with its perculiar theme.
The South-East edition had its theme, “Community policing: Rethinking national security framework for national development.”
Stakeholders made up of security agencies, traditional rulers, government functionaries, Civil Society Organisations and concerned citizens gathered to brain storm on the way out.
In his speech, Governor Rochas Okorocha, said the security problem of the country is communication gap and insensitivity of leaders to the plight of the masses.
In his goodwill message, Governor Willie Obiano represented by the chairman Vigilante Supervisory Committee, retired Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba said the security situation in the country is worrisome and advocated partnership between security agencies and communities as according to him, the number of security men is limited.
Earlier in a welcome address the convener of the meeting, Mr. Idris, said the aim of the meeting is to find a lasting solution to the security challenges in the country.
Some other speakers at the event including the National President of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo Chief Nnia Nwodo, the guest lecturer, Prof Mohammad Umar among others harped on the need for a proactive community policing for the development of the communities.
