The Bishop of Anglican Communion Calabar Diocese Holy Trinity Parish,  Professor Nneoyi Egbe has expressed serious worry that the practices of journalism in Nigeria are seriously threatened.

He also expressed  the fears that journalists themselves are facing arrays of threats.

The Bishop spoke when he received the leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Cross River State chapter in his church headquarters in Calabar.

“The practise of journalism is becoming dangerous in Nigeria and I know that many of the practitioners are facing threats to their lives.

“This is because in attempts to be objective and deliberate on the truth, many of you may face serious dangers.

“But I encourage you not to relent on your duty to the people. You must persevere on your objectivity. We, as a church, will be with you in prayers as we, too, continue to speak for the public.

“We’ll do our best to support journalism practices in Nigeria with our prayers.  We’ll continue to pray for safety of Nigerian journalists. But I caution against sycophantic or destructive journalism, such that could endanger peace and unity of the country,” Bishop Egbe said.

He assured of mutual cooperation between his church and NUJ, stating that such relationship requires sacrifices from both ends.

The cleric advised that NUJ  and the Anglican Church should ensure that their social contributions should uplift societal growth and peace.

Earlier, the chairman of NUJ in the state, Comrade Archibong Bassey, represented by the Vice Chairman, Comrade Sunny Inah of Cross River Broadcasting Corporation,  (CRBC), hailed the church for their public contributions aimed at reforming the human family.

Bassey prayed for continued mutual relationships to enable sustainability of public services by both.

She appealed for continued collaboration and spiritual guidance of the church for the NUJ and country, saying Cross River State and Nigeria need divine guidance.
