A retired teacher and an author of many primary and secondary school books, Maimuna M. Bala, says Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has upscaled the standard of education in the state compared with the level he met it when he took over power as the State Chief Executive in May last year.
While speaking to Apex News Exclusive in Birnin Kebbi, she said the governor had carried out several practical projects to justify her assertions especially when he said his administration as a starter would reintroduce two teachers training colleges for male and female teachers in the state to restore the quality of teaching and learning at grassroots level.
“The Governor described the scrapping of Teachers Colleges in the country as a mistake that affected the quality of teaching and methodology, noting that the decision left learning situation in the hands of quarks thereby imparting negatively on education,” the retired teacher passionately observed.
It was because of this, according to her, the State Chief Executive said his administration would resuscitate the education sector through infrastructural development in schools, training and retraining of teachers, improvement of their welfare packages, provision of furniture and instructional materials as well as conducive learning environment.
She pointed out that another success worthy of mention was the recent construction of additional schools across the state, noting that “some of our schools that are old and densely populated now have junior secondary schools situated with them so that students do not have to travel far from their homes, which is one of the factors why girls do not go to school. You can’t give anybody anything better than education.”
Commenting on the relationship between the Governor and the role royal fathers, the traditional title holder said, ‘as a person who deals with education at the grassroots, the Governor knows the roles the traditional institutions play in getting children registered in schools, making sure they are retained in the learning environments besides supporting teachers to carry out their activities diligently”.
Maimuna stated that the constrction and upgrade of 120 schools was carried out by the governor under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project in incollaboration with the world Bank and Dominat Engineering Limited designed to promote education sector through the provision of conducive learning environment for children, especially the girl child.
She revealed that the upgrade was from primary school to junior secondary and junior secondary to senior secondary schools under AGILE due to the grants given to schools in the state because education for the girl-child remained Government’s guarded and guided obligation that must be promoted and sustained at all cost, noting that the project had increased girl-child school enrolment by 40%.
Maimuna, a retired teacher and a traditional title holder of ‘Yar Gatan Zuru’, authored books like:- Sadik and Ten Regulations, A Joy in The Cradle, He Who Lough Last, Career Verses for Universal Basic Education as well as publications in Hausa which included; Dikko Dan Mai Icce, Kada Mai Rikida, Kowa Na Son Nagari and Wasiyar Sarki Gambo, all geared towards teaching and learning at grassroots level.
