Kebbi to construct 9 skills acquisition centers for youth development, end thuggery

Kebbi State Government has stepped up practical measures towards the construction of nine skills acquisition centers across the state with a view to empowering the redundant youths to make them self employed.

Four standard skills acquisition centers would be constructed across the four Emirates of the state while the other five mini centers would be constructed at the zonal offices of the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development across the state.

The Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Nura Bala Fingila, announced this at a Ministerial Press Briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture.

He said that the move was in tune with the provisions of the National Youth Policy of the federal government of providing skills acquisition, youth empowerment schemes as well as sponsorship for the youth from local, national and foreign sponsor for them to perfect skills of their chosen trades.

He equally said that the Ministry was ready to collaborate with both local and foreign NGOs as well as other ministries, agencies and parastatals willing to assist in the empowerment or youth training in trade, agriculture and other sectors.

The Commissioner further stated that the state government was making frantic efforts to stem the tide of thuggery among the youths by inducting them into various skills acquisition trainings with monthly stipends for self sustenance and wealth creation.

On sports, Fingilla reeled out numerous laurels won by athletes as well as sportsmen and women of the state origin in various sports, including football, volleyball, basketball, handball, badminton, beach soccer and taekwendo at both national and international levels.

According to him, professional footballers from Kebbi State were under going trials in Egypt and Portugal while the state government had opened a football academy in Birnin Kebbi in partnership with some Portuguese football promoters and players’ agents.

On his part, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Comrade Yakubu Ahmad Birnin Kebbi, said the purpose of the Ministerial press briefing was to keep the public abreast of government activities and be accountable to the people.
