Lawyer tasks journalists on promotion of African culture

Jukun has a very rich culture

An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Wasiu Bello, has advised journalists to promote the rich Nigerian and African culture through their various media.

Bello gave the advice in Ilorin on Thursday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

”We cannot ignore our own culture and continue to report on lifestyle and fashion in Brazil, France, Spain and neglect Nigeria, Ghana and other rich African life culture.

”Journalists are the eyes of the public. They need to promote African culture through their writings; show the world what we have in Africa.

“They should write about our rich textile, African food, music, religion, arts and crafts work, languages to enlighten the public and the world at large on the beauty of being Africans.

“Our culture is worth celebrating,” he said.

He said laying more emphasis on western culture to the detriment of African values would not help in the preservation of our heritage.

The lawyer however advised Nigerians and Africans to be proud of their customs and showcase same wherever they go.

He also appealed to authorities to include culture in students’ syllabuses to make them cherish our mores values.

He advised parents to teach their children decent mode of dressing and how to prepare African food as well do things the African moral way.

”Be proud of your culture. Stop denying being African. See your culture as the best and stand for it,” he said. (NAN)
