The Founder of Mailantarki Football Care Academy, Abuja, Hon. Khamisu Mailantarki has urged the Federal Government to name a sports edifice after former Super Eagles Captain late ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu.
Also a former coach of the Nigerian national football team, Chukwu, died on April 12 , 2025 at the age of 74 years.
Chukwu captained the then Green Eagles to a historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations victory and later coached the Super Eagles, which won a bronze medal at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations under his leadership.
According to a statement in Abuja, Mailantarki pointed out that the late Chukwu was a natural hero, who deserved to be worthily honoured.
He noted that he gave his all for Nigeria during his playing days and an honour will encourage present players to be committed to playing for the country.
Mailantarki, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State, also urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to establish an annual national youth football competition in honour of late Chukwu as a mark of honour.
He said such competition would not honour the late Chukwu but will help identify budding talents from across the country.
