Mararaba-Keffi: Nigeria government, CHEC commence reconstruction, expansion

In line with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of President Bola Tinubu, reconstruction and expansion work on Mararaba-Keffi road covering over forty-three kilometers has began in earnest.

On site at Zimbabwe, Karshi Development Area, Karu LG, Nasarawa State, the flag off of the road reconstruction was performed by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi alongside the contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company of Nigeria on Thursday.

The Minister expressed confidence in the contractor, saying China Harbour Engineering Company is a competent organization, very reliable and trustworthy partners to Nigeria.

He said the company has in time past done the road from Keffi to Makurdi, saying it will be inspected after which the ministry will embark on the other section that has been started from Makurdi to Enugu.

According to him: “Now the directives here is, we would complete the redesign within seven days and my site directives is that, do not bring in literates on the road. The road is very stable,the pavements are on, so we have to reinstate the pavements.

“Our design is going to be one of the best ever. So we are bringing in certain construction materials to add to the strength of the stone based”.

The Minister also pointed out that the project is going to be speedy and that Harbour Engineering Company must as a matter of urgency set up not less than two constructions sites.

He said “at the Mararaba section, we are going to do the work only at night and not in the day, because traffic is very high there. So doing it in day time is going to inconvenient a lot of people and I will becoming personally at night to supervise the work.

“We are considering a fly over at the Barracks side ,where we also have a lot of traffic there, which is going to be very urgent and I want us to study it within seven days”, he said.

Umahi also posited that the construction of the flyover will start before the middle of February.

Assuring that there will be service stations as he reiterated that as soon as the reconstruction is over, which shouldn’t be more than 12 months, it will be tolled in addition to the tolling of the Makurdi road.

“We have directed this section and we will bring in solar lights , CCTV and then we will now have security at the service station, so I want the director to reach out to the governor of Nasarawa State, so that we can acquire land within this corridor where we will build the service station”, he stated.

Earlier, Engineer Benjamin Luper Gbe who introduced the project on behalf of China Harbour Engineering Company, said the project is located in Nasarawa State, starting at Mararaba on the border between the FCT and Nasarawa State.

Engineer Gbe added that the reconstruction and expansion of the road passes through towns, such as Karu, Yasuko, Ado, Wukai and Gora, stating that it will terminates at Keffi roundabout .

“The total length of the road is approximately 43.65 kilometers . This project is an important component of Nigeria national trunk roads upgrade plan and the ” Golden Triangle” development scheme. After its successful implementation, it will enhance connectivity between Abuja and the towns along the route, contributing to the integrated development of Abuja and the surrounding towns,” he said.
