The Nigeria Association of Nurses Anaesthetist in Nasarawa State has called on the Federal and state governments to as a matter of urgency provide more equipment to anaesthetier nurses to enable them safe lives of patients under intensive care across various hospital in the country.
National President of the Association, Ejigah Ogbaje-Friday, made the appeal in a communique signed by him immediately after the 16th National scientific conference held in Lafia, the state capital.
He lamented that lack of equipment in the theatre was the major factor responsible to untimely dead of patients who are under intensive care and after a severe operation.
He disclosed that over forty nurse Anaesthetists from across the country covering the six geopolitical zones were trained during the workshop, advocating for more manpower across the nation.
According to Ogbaje-Friday, in theatre, the anaesthetist administers the anaesthetic tailored to the individual patient and remains with them throughout the operation, monitoring and treating as necessary the effects of the anaesthetic and the surgery.
The President, however, maintained that if these nurses are well trained it would help in no small measure to simple monitoring of the heart, blood pressure and oxygen levels, right through to provision of advanced organ support in complex cases.
He narrated that after the operation or procedure, the anaesthetist remains responsible for the patient in the recovery until the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off enough for the patient to return to their ward.
He noted that where complex types of pain relief are used on the ward, the anaesthetists in the pain service may continue to review and care for such patients until the need for pain relief is over.
Speaking further on the theme of the 2024 annual general meeting: “Central Anaesthesia Consideration that ensures client’s life and safety,” the national president emphasized the importance of consistent safety for patients needing anaesthesia and reducing anaesthetic-related complications.
“The recommendation is that the Government at all levels provide modern anaesthesia equipment for the best of anaesthesia care delivery and continuous training and retraining of Nurse Anaesthetists for the best of services,” the statement added.
The conference which was organised by the Nigeria Association of Nurse Anaesthetists aimed at discussing way forward in terms of safety of clients under the care of anaesthetists and sharing knowledge, promoting excellence of practice and addressing challenges facing nurse Anaesthetists in Nigeria.
