The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has initiated a significant partnership with the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT) to bolster the production of fertilizer and leather products.
This was disclosed during a meeting held at the NARICT headquarters on Basawa Road, Zaria, where the Director General of NARICT, Dr. Kabiru Muazu, hosted a delegation from NILEST led by its Director General, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam.
Dr. Muazu emphasized the critical need for collaboration between the two institutions, citing NILEST’s unique position as the only leather-focused institute in Sub-Saharan Africa.
He acknowledged NILEST’s pivotal role in the establishment of NARICT and highlighted the institute’s focus on chemical research, including fertilizer production.
“Research shows that Nigeria spends nearly $900 million annually on fertilizer imports. As such, we have tasked our research team to focus on developing local fertilizer production solutions, particularly organic alternatives,” Dr. Muazu stated.
He underscored NARICT’s commitment to addressing national development challenges through research, adding, “We identify existing gaps and work to fill them, prioritizing solutions over mere academic achievements.”
In response, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam expressed his appreciation for NARICT’s warm reception.

He highlighted the purpose of the visit, stating, “Our goal is to explore avenues for collaboration that will not only enhance the status of the Ministry of Science, Innovations, and Technology but also make Nigeria and Africa proud through groundbreaking innovations.”
Dr. Imam extended an invitation to Dr. Muazu and his team to visit NILEST facilities. “This tour will provide valuable insights into our laboratories and production lines, equipping us to better align our joint efforts for progress,” he added.
This partnership marks a significant step towards advancing research and development in fertilizer and leather industries, aiming to reduce dependency on imports and foster local innovation.
