President of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Cross River State, an umbrella body for all Ibos, Ugorji Nwabueze has called on the Southeast and South-South Nigeria to boost their food production even as farmers and foods association in the north continues to block foods and animal products from the north to the south.
Nwabueze was answering questions from reporters on the recent decision by foods association in northern Nigeria Wednesday.
He said the food blockade by the north was insensitive and a sad commentary.
He cautioned governors, senators and other political leaders to be wary of their utterances which have threatened the peace, unity and cohesion of the country.
“We have to appeal to our political leaders to restraint themselves from poor utterances. They must be careful with the way they speak so that they do not disunite the country.
“Whatever the issues are between northern and southern Nigeria, our leaders can always sit at a table to talk and resolve them. Unfortunately, our leaders seem to pour fuel into the sensitive national issues.”
He maintained that all must contribute to the peace and unity of the country, allowing all traders to freely sell in any parts of the country.
The Ohaneze boss said the blockade affords people of southern Nigeria to return to the farm and boost their farm and production.
“The response from Ohaneze and indeed the entire southern Nigeria is for all to return to the farms and boost farm yields” Nwabueze said.
