Only mediocres, opportunists fuel disunity, sentiments, says Senator Wadada

Senator Aliyu Wadada

Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, senator representing Nasarawa West has said that only mediocres and opportunists who venture into politics fuel disunity and spread sentiments because they have no value to add to the society.

Senator Wadada stated this during a conversation he held with student union leaders from across six tertiary institutions from Nasarawa State, as well as present and former national leaders of the Nasarawa State Students Association (NASSA), in Keffi on Saturday.

The lawmaker, who restated his intention to run for the 2027 governorship seat, said it is regrettable that these mediocres and opportunists are finding their way into politics only to cause problems in the society.

“Today, some mediocres, some opportunists have found their way into politics. And in politics when you go to the people you must say something. And these mediocres or opportunists dont have anything to say. So they go whipping up sentiments.

“Or Christopher couldn’t do it for you because you are Muhammad, you are a Muslim. And when they go to Muhammad, they tell Muhammad or Esther didn’t listened to you because you are a Muslim,” he said.

Wadada described the antics of these crop of politicians as not only diversionary but futile efforts to cause problems amongst the people.

The lawmaker explained that it has become necessary to unmask mediocres and opportunists masquerading as politicians before the students because they are the future leaders of the society.

“Why are we spelling out all these today to our students? You are the fabric, you are the nucleus, vehicle, pipeline, conduit and cables of every societal growth and development,” he stated.

He said the essence of the interaction with the students union leaders was to listen to each other with a view to understanding the challenges confronting the students on their journey of educational pursuit.

Wadada added that the conversation with students will also afford him the opportunity to proffer solution to some of the pressing challenges.

“When we invest in you, we are investing on the society. When we invest in you, we are investing in the most important sector of humanity. We owe ourselves the duty to tell you only those things that will make you the right future leaders,” he said.

While recalling his student’s days at Government Secondary School Miango, as well as unionism days, which prepared him for his present station in the society, Wadada however said there is much left to be desired in the conduct of some students leaders of today who have turned to award givers.

“We are where we are today because we leveraged on our youths. We also leveraged on our youthful days to package ourselves and deliver to the society. There were so many things that we were doing as students union that contributed immensely to the level that we are today socially, politically, religiously and traditionally.

“Everything that existed yesterday, exist today. But what then is the problem? In our days of unionism, nobody was good enough in the society for us to organize ourselves and give him or her an award. Students union in our days never gave anybody an award. Today student unions are everywhere involved and engaged in giving awards. That is what the day has brought. But who are the recipients of these awards? If you give award to people that deserve award, it makes the society better because it serves as encouragement and motivation. It’s becomes realistic and respectful. But if you give award to mediocres that call themselves politicians, you are destroying the society,” he added.

Senator Wadada used the opportunity of the interaction on give an inkling of what he has in store especially for the educational sector of the state, if elected as governor in 2027.

“We are going to ensure that education in Nasarawa State focuses on STEM which is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We must give much attention to the sciences because that is where the world is today. Information technology drives virtually everything,” he said.

Wadada equally spoke on the need to revitalize the scholarship scheme, making known his intention to cascade down the Federal Government’s student loan scheme in the state.

He showed commitment to reintroduce teachers training schools in order to train more qualified teachers.

Wadada used the opportunity of the event to equally commend President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for introducing the Nigeria Students Loan scheme, following which N280m was recently disbursed to over 3,000 students of tertiary institutions from Nasarawa State who are beneficiaries of the scheme.

He also commended the Nasarawa State governor, Engineer Abdullahi A. Sule for evolving an educational policy that is making the state proud judging from recent improvements in public examinations such as WAEC and NECO.

Responding to the challenges of the students, Wadada said being the pragmatic leader and politician that he is, he will not wait until 2027 before taking steps to address some of these challenges.

“We must not wait until 2027 because 2027 is in the hands of God. But Wadada is one leader, Wadada is one politician, one student who does not wait. We don’t leave what we can do today for tomorrow. We will look at some of these problems you mentioned and eventually resolve them,” he assured the students.

Highlight of the interaction was the presentation of seven vehicles to the union officials comprising of the national body of NASSA and six chapters of the association in the selected tertiary institutions from across the state.

Wadada also donated one million naira to indigenous students of Nasarawa State studying in the University of Maiduguri who were affected by the recent flooding that ravaged section of the Borno State capital.
