Past, present leaders responsible for Nigeria’s woes
By Akpan David, Calabar
A former chairman of Nigerian Bar Association, (NBA), Calabar branch, Chief Mba Ukweni (SAN) has laid the blames for Nigeria’s many socioeconomic and sociopolitical problems on the laps of the country’s past and present leaders.
In an interview, the legal expert further alleged that these leaders do not have the interest of the country at heart, lamenting that they have rather put their personal and families’ interests first to the detriment of the country
He lamented that they have allowed the country to become consuming economy instead of productive one thereby plunging the country into poverty.
Chief Ukweni said with abundant resources and vast land space couple with the human population, the country has no business with poverty.
He noted that the country consumes and borrows more than what they produced which makes it practically impossible for the country to grow economically
He advised the Oragnised Labour that they should rather fight for economic stability by pushing for the system to be productive instead of asking for increase in salaries.
“As long as there is no production in the country, the economy can never be strong. Our national currency, the Naira, will continue to be weak, no matter how much is given to workers as salaries.”
He said in the 1970s and the 1980s before the devaluation of Naira, Nigeria was one of the strongest economies because it was a production economy, and the Naira was ahead of many foreign currencies.
Reflecting on 25 years of Democracy in the country, Ukweni alleged that it has brought too much hardship to Nigerians.
