Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Y Suleiman has opined that paving the way for more women participation in politics and other arena like business, is an investment worth venturing.
He made the statement while speaking as a Special Guest of honour at the Nigeria men’s conference on gender-sensitive constitutional reform organized by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the supporting Advancement of Gender Equality (SAGE)  under the National Democratic Institute which took place on Tuesday at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
The Speakers Chairman explained that the effective way to accomplish this noble objective is through the alteration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He said that, “We acknowledge the commitment of the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives for initiating a Bill titled ‘A Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to create Additional Special Seats for women in Federal and State Legislative Houses and for Related Matters’.
Abubakar Suleiman added that, “If the Bill is passed by the National Assembly and its resolution transmitted to the State Houses of Assembly; I want to assure you that the Conference of Speakers shall sensitize our colleagues at the state level on the importance of this Bill; and consequently I am confident that we shall record more than the required two-third ratification in favour of the proposed amendment.”.
The Speakers Chairman commended the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, for her passion and enthusiasm in the diligent discharge of her ministerial mandate for the good of women and the organizers of the event and inviting him as Special Guest.
