The Plateau State University, (PLASU), authority has declared a two-day mourning in sympathy for the killing by suspected herdsmen of a 200 level student after the invasion of the institution by the terrorists.

As a result, examination scheduled for the period the mourning would last have been suspended, the Registrar of PLASU, Yakubu F. Ayube disclosed in a press statement.

Eyewitneses disclosed that the
entire university and it’s neighbours have been running helter-skelter to evade the marauding herdsmen who have launched “a deadly attack with no control”, a fleeing student disclosed in a state of fear.

The eyewitness further confirmed the presence of the security operatives in the heat of the ongoing skirmishes was inadequate because the herdsmen were using sophisticated weapons that cannot be matched in any way by the security personnel.

Earlier, the police public relations officer, PPRO, Alfred Alabo disclosed that more policemen have been deployed to the institution to quell the situation.

Suspending the examination in respect to the death of Dading James Jordan, the 200 level student, he added in the release that the “Community woke up to the sad news of another heartless attack on Chikam, a community close to the university”

He further said “This is coming despite the relentless effort by the Plateau State government, security agencies, the Management of the University and other stakeholders at improving the security situation on our campus and the surrounding communities. Unfortunately, the enemies of the University and the state brought thus dastardly attack leading to the loss of our dear student.

“The Vice-Chancellor and the entire management convey their condolences to the family of the deceased, the student body and the university community.

“In view of this sad development, Management has declared a two-day mourning period on Friday 19” and Saturday 20 April, 2024.

Accordingly, all the examinations earlier scheduled for Friday 19 and Saturday 20 April, 2024 are hereby suspended.

“While calling on our students to remain caim and law abiding, we wish to call on the security agencies to beef up security around the university in order to secure staff and students as we look into other ways of making the University more secure”, the Registrar said in the statement.
