Preparation in top gear ahead of World Environmental Day in Bauchi
The Director-General, (DG), Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Ibrahim Kabir, has attended an interactive meeting with critical stakeholders in preparation for the World Environmental Day celebration scheduled for Thursday, June 18.
The DG used the occasion to unveil his proposed Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) action plan for Bauchi metropolis.
The action plan identified the five key sources of waste in the metropolis, which are residential, commercial, factories, industries and health care facilities.
The action plan was also designed to work in three stages which he identified as short, medium and long term plans.
The stakeholders were drawn from faith-based organizations which include imams and pastors, traditional as well as community leaders, community-based organisations, NGOs, market leaders as well as women and yourhs organizations and the media.
The idea of the meeting is to inform and sensitize the participants on the proposed municipal solid waste management (MSWM) action plan for Bauchi metropolis and for them to take the messages to their respective domains. This is also in line with the new strategy in environmental protection and sanitation.
In his opening remarks,the Director-General welcome the participants and expressed satisfaction for honouring the invitation and the coorporation he is so far receiving from them (Community leaders) since his assumption of office as the DG BASEPA and pray that the tempo will be maintained so as to have a clean and healthy Bauchi state.
The Director of forestry of the ministry of environment and housing, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to achieve a healthier and safer environment,he also thanks the invited participants for honouring the invitation.
In their separate responses representative of the NUJ, Mallam Nasiru Abdullahi Kobi urged the agency to ensure optimum utilisation of the Bauchi waste recycling plant and it’s value chain and other benefits and Mallam Jinjiri J Garba, the Chairman Bauchi State Network for Civil Society Organizations (BASNEC) complained on the incessant tree fellings in the state and it’s dangers to our environment.
