Smugglers use Christmas, New Year festivities for criminal activites- CG Customs

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi says smugglers have used the Christmas and New Year festivities to intensify smuggling of petroleum product to the neighboring country.
Adaniyi who was in Yola the Adamawa state capital on the recent seizure of petroleum products under the operation “Whirlwind” and that the resolition of his men to tackle the menance smuggling of petroleum products.
The CGC of Customs “we will remain resolute in protecting the economy of the country as it is ever ready to tackle the smuggling of petroleum products outside the country”.
He vowed that, ‘Smuggling has continue to affect the economy of the country in all the ramifications the Nigeria Customs in collaboration with other sister security agencies will not relent in their efforts to curb the scourge”.
Adeniyi also reiterated that, the smuggling activities of petroleum products constitute a lot of sabotage to the nation’s economy while denying millions of Nigeria availability of the products, until the establishment of the “Operation Whirlwind ” to curb the neferious activities of the smugglers”.
At the begining of the first quarter of 2025, Adeniyi revealed the Custom’s card through the following intensive-driven operation across the Adamawa / Taraba Command as gallant Officers of the Operation Whirlwind recently intercepted and seized a total of 199, 495 liters of PMS being diverted through various concealment methods and smuggling techniques.
He accordingly said, a the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seized products amount to One hundred and ninty nine million, four hundred and ninty five thousand naira (N199, 495,00).
“The seized items include Four Fuel Tankers Carrying 97,000 liters each totaling 34,075, liters and 311 drums of 220 liters each,” he added.
Comptroller General Bashir Adeniyi identified volatile smuggling corridors within the Adamawa/Taraba states Command to include Mova Dasin, Galamba, Song axis, and the critical waterway points among the maritine international boarders with the Republic of Cameroon.
He however, recalled that last year, ” we report a total seizure 1,716,656 liters of petroleum products for the year ended 2024 as products were systematically diverted to neighbouring countries through illegal routes and waterways”.
The Operation Whirlwind Commander, ACG Hussain Egigono expressed dissatisfaction that “the level of smuggling in Adamawa/Taraba state is more than any where in Nigeria”.
