Kebbi erupted with excitement on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, as a monumental rally organized by various private groups took center stage.
More than 250 organizations, bolstered by widespread support from the community, participated in the event held at the Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital. The rally drew a distinguished assembly of political figures, allies, and supporters from across the nation, including the state’s former governors, two ministers, and numerous high-ranking officials who came to demonstrate their backing for the initiative.
The overwhelming attendance, representing all 21 local government areas, underscores its significance. This enthusiastic response reflects the strong backing that Governor Nasir Idris’s administration enjoys from the people of Kebbi state. Furthermore, there is a shared recognition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for the governor’s efforts to secure vital funding for a state that has suffered from infrastructure neglect since its formation in 1991.
Upon taking office nearly two years ago, Dr. Nasir Idris encountered a region desperately lacking the necessary infrastructure to stimulate its economy. Many facilities had deteriorated or were entirely absent. As the first fully homegrown governor, he possesses an intimate understanding of the local challenges, which has enabled him to create effective strategies to meet the people’s needs.
In a remarkably short time, the governor has honored over 75% of his campaign promises, continually adding value to the lives of his constituents.
The Kebbi state government is committed to its employees, with no outstanding liabilities. Salaries are paid promptly, and all pensions, gratuities, leave allowances, and even death benefits have been delivered in full with not a dime being owed; zero liability if you like.
Under Nasir Idris’s leadership, Kebbi state has not taken out loans or overdrafts from any institutions, maintaining fiscal independence while meeting its commitments. The state is witnessing a construction boom, with projects in roads, schools, motor parks, healthcare, agriculture, information services, and electricity being established to enhance the quality of life for its residents and improve their capacity to do their businesses under an amiable and conducive atmosphere to live decent lives
A key priority of the Kauran Gwandu administration has been to empower local populations, particularly farmers, women, youths, and small businesses. The government has distributed free fertilizers to farmers to boost yields and ensure food security. Additionally, over 500 trailer loads of assorted food items have been bought and distributed to vulnerable populations, with another 300 trailers ready for upcoming distribution just before Ramadan Fast starts.
Key urban roads in Birnin Kebbi and Yauri have already been completed, with Argungu’s upgrade underway, followed closely by plans for Zuru Emirate. The long-awaited reconstruction of the 87-kilometer Koko/Zuru road, crucial for enhancing agricultural production and trade in this economic corridor, has already commenced.
The accomplishments of the Kebbi state government are numerous and merit detailed discussion.
These factors are vital in understanding why the people of Kebbi responded enthusiastically to calls from grassroots groups and local leaders, demonstrating their loyalty and appreciation for a government they overwhelmingly elected.
It is crucial to note that the funds used to organize this rally came exclusively from private sources, with no involvement from the Kebbi state government. This distinction adds to the event’s neutrality and community spirit.
Today’s rally, which attracted an unprecedented number of attendees, stands as a testament to the popularity of the APC administration in Kebbi state, providing a preview of what the 2027 elections may hold.
