A nephew to Nigeria’s first President Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr Arinze Modebe has been elected and sworn-in as the new President of Onitsha Sports Club.
The Sports Club founded in 1929 serves as a recreation centre for the elites in Onitsha and their wives and also a rallying point for other activities.
Modebe, a medical doctor in a speech after his swearing in by a Senior Magistrate, Uche Amechi promised to make Onitsha Sports Club the first and best port of call for any tourist coming into the Anambra commercial city.
Priding himself to be associated with the late Zik of Africa, Dr Modebe recalled that his late mother and Zik were the only children their mother had while alive and prayed that he will replicate that same sense of responsibility and fear of God which the late Zik lived for.
On the state of the nation, he called on the leaders in the country to wake up to their responsibility and halt all the killings going on in the country.
He called on politicians to fear God in whatever they are doing and also desists from do or die politics as the 2019 elections get closer.
He promised to maintain discipline in the club and also work like brothers towards uplifting the club even as popular transporter, Chief Godwin Okeke of G.U.0 Motors made a monetary donation as seed money from which the new executives can use to take off in their activities.
