Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and former Governor of Plateau State Simon Lalong joined family members, friends, former government officials and distinguished Nigerians to celebrate Mrs. Victoria Gowon, wife of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), as she marked her 80th birthday
The gathering was a celebration of a remarkable Nigerian woman whose life has been defined by grace, courage, integrity, compassion and unwavering commitment to family and service.
Senator Lalong described Mrs. Gowon as a woman whose contribution to Nigeria goes far beyond her role as the wife of a former Head of State. He said she demonstrated exceptional strength and steadfastness during some of the most difficult periods in the nation’s history, particularly during the civil war, when she stood firmly beside her husband while providing stability and leadership on the home front.
He noted that her life reflects the values of principle, virtue, loyalty and compassion, earning her the respect and affection of generations of Nigerians. He said her 80th birthday was more than a personal milestone. It was an opportunity for the nation to honour a lifetime of sacrifice, faith, family, service and commitment to peace.
“Mrs. Victoria Gowon represents a generation of Nigerian women whose strength, sacrifice and commitment helped sustain families and communities during some of the most challenging moments in our national history. Her life is a story of dignity, courage, loyalty and service,” Senator Lalong said.
The Senator commended Mrs. Gowon’s enduring commitment to humanitarian causes, peace, national unity and the wellbeing of families and communities. He also celebrated the enduring partnership between Mrs. Gowon and General Yakubu Gowon, describing their shared journey as an important part of Nigeria’s history.
Senator Lalong prayed for God’s continued blessings, good health, wisdom and strength for Mrs. Gowon as she enters her ninth decade, wishing her many more years of fulfilment and service.
He said her enduring legacy will continue to inspire younger Nigerians to uphold integrity, sacrifice, compassion, family values and service to humanity.
