The Azia community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State came alive on Thursday as the traditional ruler, HRH Igwe Francis U. Chikezie (Ugodinaobi), Igwe Azia II, celebrated his first New Yam Festival since ascending the throne.
The colourful celebration attracted residents, visitors and dignitaries from different parts of Anambra State and beyond, who gathered at the monarch’s palace to witness the historic event.
Security was noticeably tight across the community, with personnel of the police, military and local vigilante groups deployed at strategic locations to maintain order and ensure the peaceful conduct of the festivities.
The programme began with an interdenominational thanksgiving service attended by representatives of the Catholic, Anglican and Pentecostal denominations.
In his sermon, the Parish Priest of Mary the Queen Parish, Azia, Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Onwugbueze, said communities naturally experience joy when righteous and responsible people are entrusted with leadership.
Fr. Onwugbueze urged the monarch and members of his cabinet to always put God first in their affairs. He also prayed for Igwe Chikezie, his cabinet and the entire Azia Kingdom, asking God to grant them wisdom, peace and direction.
Following the service, Igwe Ugodinaobi performed the traditional breaking of the yam, formally declaring the 2026 New Yam Festival open amid cheers and applause from the gathering.
The monarch subsequently offered prayers for the people of Azia, seeking divine blessings for peace, business prosperity, successful careers for workers and continued development of the kingdom.
The celebration also attracted several political figures and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those present was the Chief Executive Officer of Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd., Chief Ebuka Onukwo, who is an NDC senatorial candidate for Anambra South. Other political aspirants and candidates from various political parties also attended the ceremony to celebrate with the monarch.
A native of Azia and Onitsha-based businessman, Mr Chikamso Ike, described the turnout of prominent personalities as unprecedented, saying it reflected the growing influence and acceptance of Igwe Francis Chikezie.
The festivities continued into the night, with dignitaries including representatives of Igwe Gibson Nwosu, the traditional ruler of Awka; the Obi of Obiofia in Nnewichi-Nnewi; Prof. Denise Nnana; Chief Gabriel Chike Okafor; Ichie Hyginus Ndukaku; and representatives of various women’s groups in attendance.
Members of the monarch’s family, led by Mr Chigozie Ifeanyi, also made a special appearance at the celebration.
The event ended on a festive note, with residents and guests celebrating the monarch while showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Azia Kingdom.
